cultural competency

Another hot issue right now is cultural competence, which like others
is
being used against us but has the potential to be used for us. There
are
cultures and religions that don't use drugging at all who are getting
more
press and validation. The discussions about culture point to the
obvious
question about "mental illness" and how subjective it is. In the
discussion
of culture, it becomes clear that there cannot be one standard for
diagnosis
since all cultures see behaviors differently and attribute them to
different
causes. The downside is that pharma is using this as a tactic to pull
in
people of opressed and minority cultures by propogating "mental illness
knows no race." They are reaching out to (and
funding) people of color and other minority groups in order to feed
them the
medical model, get them on drugs and starting their own communities of
drugged "mentally ill people" who "need their medication" and "need
services
too" in the name of cultural empowerment. This is clearly manipulative
and
NOT a positive trend for human rights.
